Airways New Zealand hosted the 12th Thales Users Group (TUG) conference in Christchurch from 16th to 20th March 2008. The event has been organised every 18 months since 1991 by customers of Thales’s air traffic management activities. Over the years, the TUG conference has proved to be a great opportunity for the worldwide civil aviation authority to share their operational experiences and set the basis for discussions regarding technology progress, service and system functionality, and harmonisation.

A delegation from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) today witnessed the first demonstration of the latest variant of the self-propelled Starstreak missile system, incorporating automatic target tracking (ATT), new control consoles and the firing of the new standard of Starstreak missile (Starstreak II).

At the CELM missile launch test centre in Biscarrosse, southwest France, on 31 January 2008 at 14:50 CET, the Crotale Mk3 missile system destroyed a target flying at an altitude of 500 metres and a range of almost 15 000 metres in less than 35 seconds.

Thales announced today the award of a contract from FINAVIA, the Finnish Air Traffic Service provider, for the delivery, installation and operational commissioning of its MAGS1 transponder multilateration system at Helsinki Vantaa Airport. Thales was found superior to its competitors by FINAVIA’s evaluation criteria including procurement cost, delivery time, operational and technical characteristics, maintenance and support offering and installation approach. The contract will be fully executed in 2008.
