Towards trusted partnership with NATO

05  March  2008
Thales has progressively strengthened its ties with the NATO Alliance during its transformation.

Since the mid 1990s, NATO's mission has progressively shifted from static defence of territory to deployed and expeditionary crisis management, peace support and combat operations based on multifaceted power projection and civil-military coordination.

This has resulted in radical changes in NATO's command and force structures and fundamental shifts in capability requirements and doctrine. The emphasis today is on deployable, interoperable forces to address a range of threats and challenges, to fight if necessary and to support peace and reconstruction where possible.

Based on deep analysis and understanding of NATO's operational objectives and evolving priorities, Thales has shown that it can partner with the Alliance in providing needed new capabilities:

  • Thales's Battlespace Transformation Centre, through the Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium (NCOIC), is fully engaged in setting new standards in interoperable C4ISTAR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance)

  • Thales is providing an extensive satellite communications network service to support the NATO-led ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) in Afghanistan. Through this  programme (FOC+), Thales and its industry partners have shown they are able to provide high technology communications support to crisis response operations at very short notice and under demanding combat zone conditions

  • Thales is also providing Electronic protected Modem System (EMS), fully compliant with NATO standard STANAG 4606, for secure Satellite Communications under jamming conditions.

  • Thales has recently been down-selected for LC2IS (Land Command & Control Information System) thanks to its technological and integration competencies and its ability to ensure that systems are truly interoperable

  • Thales is also engaged in many other critical C4ISTAR projects in support of NATO, including  NATO ACCS (Air Command and Control System), ALTBMD (Active Layer Theatre Ballistic Missile Defence), NATO Crypto, NATO satellites and ground stations

Based on its demonstrated capacity to  delivers modular, secure and interoperable solutions to meet emerging operational requirements, Thales is the leading supplier of C4ISTAR systems to NATO and a valued capability partner.
