Contracts for the Northern section of longest train line in Shanghai

Alcatel-Lucent and Thales awarded two contracts: Thales to supply CBTC signalling system by 2012, Alcatel-Lucent to provide network integration

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Thales, today announced that they have signed two further contracts with Shanghai Shentong Metro Co, Ltd. . Shanghai Shentong Group Co. awarded the contracts valued at 50 million Euros (RMB 518 million) to a consortium involving Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's flagship company in China, Thales Rail Signalling Solutions and Shanghai Automation Instrumentation Co. Under this new project Alcatel Shanghai Bell will be providing a turnkey integrated communications system, with Services experts responsible for project management and network integration services. The company will also be responsible for maintaining the multi-vendor solution. Thales will provide its world-leading SelTrac Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system for the automatic operation of Shanghai's new metro Line 11, currently the longest train line in the city.

The Northern section of Line 11 will be built in three stages. Phase one, which is to be completed in 2009, is 44.9km long and will serve 21 stations with 58 trains from Jiading North station to Jiangsu Road station, including a branch line to Anting station. Phase two, which is scheduled to be ready for passenger service in 2012, will initially span across 14.6 km serving eight stations from Shanghai Jiao Tong University to Sanlin station. A further extension is planned to service five additional stations in the future.

On the Shanghai project, lines six, eight and nine, which stretch across 90km have been successfully put into operation within two years .The efficient and effective implementation of this project reflects the strength and expertise of our consortium," said Jean-Pierre Forestier, Vice President, Managing Director of Thales Rail Signalling activity.
