I have been fortunate to have a truly international career with Thales. Straight from Engineering School, I spent my first six months working, first in France, then in Hong Kong. In mid-1999 I started work in Melbourne as a Business Development Manager. Then I was appointed as bid manager. The transition to my new role was easier than I expected, but there was a great deal that I had to learn. I needed to quickly develop a deeper understanding of the technical solutions Thales can propose, and also of the needs and expectations of our clients. I have learnt that, to be an effective Bid Manager, you need to be a good communicator, enjoy working under the pressure of tight deadlines; and be able to liaise effectively with, and coordinate the work of, other departments and teams. I feel I have made a good choice in moving to Bid Management. The real pleasure of the job is when you succeed in winning a major bid.
