The MAGS surveillance system will provide high accuracy, high update rate surveillance for all transponder equipped aircraft operating in Helsinki-Vantaa's movement and apron areas. Helsinki-Vantaa airport is the main airport and international gateway in Finland. Altogether 12 million passengers pass through the airport annually. During rush hours an aircraft takes off or lands every 1.5 minute. The airport handles 600 flight operation per day and 150 000 per year. "Thales has made a strategic investment in multilateration and ADS-B technology to reinforce our leadership position surveillance technology for air traffic management", stated Paul Kahn, Managing Director of Thales' Navigation and Airport Solutions Business Line. 1 Multilateration Air-Ground Surveillance
2 ADS-B is an emerging technology that allows aircraft to periodically broadcast GPS position, altitude, speed and identity information. The broadcast information may be received and processed by other aircraft or ground stations for use in improved situational awareness, conflict avoidance and airspace management.
3 TIS-B is an augmentation to ADS-B that facilitates transition from traditional radar surveillance to ADS-B by broadcasting traffic information for non-ADS-B aircraft to ADS-B aircraft enabling on-board safety and efficiency applications.
