Chief Technical Officer

Michel Fiat has been named Chief Technical Officer of Thales Alenia Space, effective July 1, 2007.

Michel Fiat , born in 1957, is a French national. He graduated from the INSA engineering school in Lyon with a degree in mechanical engineering. He began his career in 1980 as design engineer with the Telecom Division of Thomson-CSF, then was named project manager for submarine antennas deployed by the French navy.

After joining the Space department in 1983 in Toulouse, Michel Fiat headed the design office for payload equipment and configuration management. He was involved in most space programs involving the new company, including Spot, ERS, Telecom 2 and Eutelsat 2.

From 1990 to 1994, Michel Fiat was in charge of wiring production (microwave substrate & PCB technologies) at Alcatel Space. In 1994, he was appointed project manager for deployment of the new Information System for Production Control (Control Open) and Product Data Management (3IT). After successfully completing these projects, in 1997 Alcatel corporate headquarters asked him to oversee the information systems aspects of the Concerto corporate project, including installation of SAP software for Alcatel operations in five countries (France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy).

In 1999, he was named head of the production department in Toulouse, then moved to Cannes to lead the new mechanical products unit in the onboard systems division.

After the company merged with Alenia Spazio in January 2005, he joined the Telecom Business Unit to lead the engineering division (space segment, satellite, payload, platform operation & ground control). He reinforced the vertical integration of the Spacebus family, which was successfully qualified on its first flight in February. He was also appointed Telecom Technical Officer at the Telecom Business, with strong involvement in R&D strategy and product policy, including the Italian operations of the Telecom Business Unit and subsidiaries.
