Thales recently completed delivery of a latest-generation control & supervision solution for the storage and delivery facilities along the oil pipeline operated by SPSE (South European Pipeline Company). The new system spans all of the oil storage and transport zones along the 1,000-km network which runs from Fos-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean to Karlsruhe in Germany. Each year the pipeline transports 440,000 bbl/d - amounting to 30% of all crude oil transported by pipeline in Europe - to four refineries and a petrochemicals platform.

The full system was recently delivered to SPSE under optimum safety and security conditions, with Thales ensuring service continuity and uninterrupted supply to the refineries along the pipeline throughout the deployment phase. Thales will also ensure maintenance and upgrades to the mission critical system for a period of three years.

The Thales system enables remote control and supervision of the pipeline facilities. Based on the modular, easy-to-use Thales SCADA (Supervisory Control and data Acquisition) software platform, which is tailored to the specific requirements of oil storage and transportation, the system manages all security applications along the pipeline. It allows operators to supervise and control the various devices used to transport the crude oil to pumping stations, valves and delivery terminals.

Thales also supplied a secure transmission system based on a combination of broadband IP satellite and a GPRS backup system. This is the first-ever communication system designed specifically for the remote control & supervision of an oil pipeline.

"SPSE selected Thales for its engineering expertise, extensive experience in the oil & gas market and secure architecture know-how. The new supervision system has enabled us to maximise control over the pipeline, improve flow management, reduce energy costs and above all ensure greater safety for our workforce and our facilities," said Jacques Dubois, Technical Director at SPSE and head of the company's Fos-sur-Mer site.

This latest success further endorses Thales's expertise for the supply of integrated, turnkey mission critical systems and bolsters its position as a leading provider of control & supervision solutions to the oil & gas industry for more than 30 years. Thales counts several major international operators among its customer base, including Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, Sonatrach, Pemex and Gaz de France.
