Thales strengthens position in global transportation industry by supplying Santiago deChile with signalling solutions and integrated communication and supervision system to improve rail infrastructure

Berlin, 26 September 2008
- Thales today announced that it is providing Empresa de Transporte de Pasajeros Metro S.A., Santiago's metro operator, with its SCADAsoft solution and automatic train supervision system. Thales is also supplying a modular interlocking system, LockTrac 6172 PMI, to improve the signalling control functionality of two of the network's metro lines. This latest contract follows a number of high-profile metro and urban area transport projects around the world including Dubai, Mexico and Algiers.

The project includes the extension of Santiago's metro lines 1 and 5 by the end of 2009 with an additional extension to line 5 to be completed by the end of 2010. Having previously supplied Control Traffic Centre (CTC) systems to Metro S.A., the project will provide the Chilean capital's rail network operator with the ability to set and confirm routes, manage train moves within the depot and control and monitor signalling assets.

Thales was selected by Empresa de Transporte de Pasajeros Metro S.A. after a Public Contest due to the proven metro network management capabilities of SCADAsoft, its expertise in full communication and signalling solutions and the company's 40 years' experience in the global transportation industry.

Thales has demonstrated a clear understanding of the requirements of Santiago's rail network and also has a proven track record of maintaining full operation of transport networks during the replacement process. Having previously worked on communication and signalling supply projects in Shanghai and Paris, Thales was able to provide with a secure, sophisticated and proven solution. With its strong technical knowledge and delivery methodology, Thales will meet the project demands and deliver the necessary upgrades to the network on time and to the highest quality standards.

Olivier Houssin, Executive Vice-President of Thales, says: "Our strong heritage and expertise within the global transportation market has allowed us to offer Santiago Metro a competitive cost-effective and proven solution which should bring the metro network into the 21st century. The project builds on our current experience of working on global transportation projects and places us in a good position to work on further contracts in Chile."
